Amsterdam in winter

Winter shows Amsterdam at its cosiest. Lights along the canals, warm cafés and the lowest prices of the year. Those who avoid the crowds have the city almost to themselves.

Between December and February the temperature is usually between 0 and 8 degrees. It is cold, but the city makes up for it with atmosphere: from late November to mid-January the Amsterdam Light Festival lights up the canals with light art, lovely to see from a canal cruise or simply on foot.

Around the holidays it is pleasantly busy, with Christmas markets and lit-up streets. After that, in January and February, prices fall sharply and the museums are at their quietest. For an affordable, calm city break, that is the best time of year.

In winter, choose a warm, personal place: a cosy B&B in a quiet neighbourhood, or a houseboat with views over the still water. Thanks to low winter prices you often book more comfort for less. Do reserve in good time around the holidays.
