Amsterdam in autumn
Autumn is an underrated season in Amsterdam. The summer crowds ebb away, the city turns atmospheric and prices drop. Perfect for anyone after culture, cosiness and a little more calm.
From September to November it gradually cools and rain becomes more frequent, but the city is at its cosiest. The canals take on autumn colours, the museums are quieter and the brown cafés feel instantly warm. September and early October especially offer a nice mix of mild weather and shorter queues.
It is the moment for culture: the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the smaller museums are far more pleasant to visit without the summer crowds. From November prices also fall, making autumn a smart season for a city break.
After peace and space? Autumn is ideal: choose a B&B in a green, residential neighbourhood and enjoy the city without the bustle. A houseboat is special now too, with the soft autumn light over the water. And thanks to lower prices you get more out of your stay.
